FAQs
How many weeks should I book for my child?
For all beginner level students, a 2-week minimum is recommended.
If your child is able to swim the full length of a pool with intermittent recovery breaths, then 1-week of lessons is ok to schedule.
Can I stay and watch the lesson?
MONDAY through WEDNESDAY each week are DROP OFF ONLY.
Parents are ONLY allowed to stay and watch on SHOW OFF DAYS (planned for Thursday each week).
Drop off means you will drop off your child and exit the pool area — please do not hang by the gait as this is distracting to all swimmers and is not permitted. No parents/siblings/etc will be allowed to remain by the pool during lesson times due to safety protocols.
Weather Updates: We swim in the rain (not downpours of course…)! If there is lightning in close proximity (radar will be poolside), I will cancel the lesson for safety. Please assume all lessons are ON as scheduled unless you see either:
an update on the Swimming With Jordan Facebook site (i post updates here FIRST)
**make sure to “Like” the Facebook page to be in the know!**You will receive a text message or phone call from me AT LEAST 30 minutes prior to your lesson. (An update on the Swimming With Jordan FB site will be posted first, then I will begin contacting the affected families via phone and/or email in order of affected lessons).
Will my child learn to swim?
That’s the goal! Pending a child’s strength, motor development, coordination, comfort level in the water, and the lesson type (ISR vs Traditional) — the more weeks of swim lessons you enroll your child in, the more progress they will make with their independent swimming skills. They will be able to begin learning underwater breath control, floating and kicking skills, as well as arm and leg movements to move through the water to swim. In our Traditional Stroke lesson classes, we work with children to develop a swim-float-swim pattern, where they roll onto their back to rest and breathe before returning to the swimming position. Emphasis is on horizontal postures in the water to maintain safety (vertical positioning in the water in young children is commonly referred to as a “drowning position.”). **I STRONGLY encourage all swimmers, especially those ages 6 months to 3 years of age, to participate in ISR lessons prior to stroke development**. My ISR swimmers WILL be able to perform a swim-float-swim sequence, even at age 2. Information in ISR lesson can be found here.
Is the pool heated? YES
When is payment due?
Payment is due immediately after receiving your Registration Confirmation. Payment info will be provided in the confirmation email.
Thursdays are SHOW OFF days!!
Every Thursday is a SHOW OFF day! Please feel free to bring cameras, video, etc, and we will make it a fun day as the children show off to family & friends what they have learned. For 2021, we are only allowing ONE parent/caregiver to attend Show Off Day, and will be abiding by social distancing guidelines as well as masks will be required in the pool area. We want to celebrate your child’s accomplishments to be ready to cheer them on!!!
Are there any treats?
Of course! Swim Lessons wouldn’t be as much fun without TREATS! Your child is welcome to choose ONE snack (lollipop, stickers, etc) after each lesson….and a special treat will be available on Show Off Day (Thursday) along with a medal! If you have a child with food allergies, please bring your own snack or prize (stickers, etc). Please make sure your child eats their treat OUTSIDE of the pool area!
What about sunscreen?
PLEASE use sunscreen. But PLEASE do NOT apply sunscreen on your child 2 minutes before they enter the water. It comes right off and leaves a greasy film which is not fun for children opening their eyes underwater. PLEASE apply sunscreen to your child BEFORE getting in the car to come to your lesson and allow AT LEAST 20 minutes for it to soak into their skin.
Do you teach advanced swimmers?
Yes! I have Junior Olympic Swimming experience myself, and use that expertise to teach advanced skills to swimmers for swim team placement and advancement, etc. There is always room for stroke enhancement, mastering a flip turn, etc. :)
Do you recommend goggles?
Sure! We will swim with and without goggles during every lesson regardless. If a child is nervous in the water, sometimes using goggles is a fun way for them to realize that they can see underwater! Other children simply like to open their eyes underwater. It just depends on the child. Feel free to bring goggles to the lesson. I will also have several pairs handy for them to try if they like. Some love them, some do not! Either way is okay. My favorite goggles for children: any goggle that THEY get to pick out because they are more likely to wear it!!!
**for all ISR lessons, children are NOT allowed to use goggles**
Will you throw my child in the water?
Never! That is not an appropriate way for a child to learn that swimming is fun. We will work with breath control underwater based on each child’s comfort level, and work on safety skills.
What kinds of things do you teach my child?
Safety, safety, safety! Safety is my highest priority, that being achieved by unique and fun drills that will promote their comfort level in the water, as well as enable them to learn skills that can save their life. We work on breath control, kicking efficiently, moving their arms in a freestyle stroke pattern, horizontal head down swimming position, floating on their backs, rolling to a recovery breath, how to return to the wall swimming, sustained floating, treading water (advanced swimmers), and more!
Skills learned (categories may blend some):
BEGINNERS: Underwater breath control, assisted reaching, assisted launch, assisted back float, assisted roll over, assisted kicking, awareness of safety zones, kicking on front, kicking on back.
INTERMEDIATE: Independent launch, independent back float, independent roll to front and back, streamline, reach and pull, modified backstroke, breast stroke (arms only), mid-range assisted underwater toy retrieval, streamline kick on front and back, etc
ADVANCED: Independent underwater toy retrieval, freestyle, backstroke, modified backstroke, breaststroke, treading water, streamline to strokes, safety protocol for fatigue, dolphin kick, etc
Do you teach adults?
YES I do — however my focus for 2023 will be children since we are now a foster family. For adults, I would search for a local program to enroll in where you can attend regularly!
What happens if my child is sick?
Please do not bring your child to their swim lesson if they are sick. They will not enjoy their time in the water, and we want to protect all little ones from spreading an illness. Make sure your child has been fever free for 24 hrs prior to attending a lesson. Pending availability, a child may make up that lesson during a regularly scheduled lesson time on alternate week, but I can NOT guarantee a make up. Fridays are reserved solely for lessons that need to be made up due to inclement weather cancellations. If your child has to miss several lessons due to an illness, I will absolutely do my best to make those lessons up.
What about refunds?
If you are able to provide me with a MINIMUM 3-week notice if your child is unable to attend their scheduled lesson, I will be able to provide you with a refund minus a $50 processing fee ONLY if I am able to fill your spot with another student. The class spots are filled by the instructor as they are specially designed classes with specific needs & skills sets to consider, this will be solely at the instructor’s discretion.
What about parking?
Please park in front of the house (in the correct direction of the flow of traffic).
Are restrooms available?
**NO** Restrooms will not be available. Please encourage your child to use the restroom before they attend the lesson. I will provide drinks AFTER the lesson, so please limit the liquids beforehand. I will have a small children's toilet (think potty training size!) on the side of the house in a private area for emergencies only set up with wipes and hand sanitizer. IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT POTTY TRAINED ABSOLUTELY 100%, then a DOUBLE SWIM DIAPER IS MANDATORY. These must fit snuggly around their thighs. NO EXCEPTIONS. Reusable swim diapers preferred over disposable ones.
