WHY ISR

RESEARCH & SAFETY
With more than 45 years of research and development behind ISR's self-rescue program, ISR teaches each child survival skills in conjunction with basic swimming lessons that give them the competence and confidence required to safely enjoy the water.

DROWNING STATISTICS
Children ages 1-4 have the highest drowning rates. In 2014, among children 1-4 years old who died from an unintentional injury, one third died from drowning. Among children ages 1-4, most drownings occur in home swimming pools. Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children ages 1-4 than any other cause except for congenital anomalies (birth defects). Among those 1-14, fatal drowning remains the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death behind motor vehicle crashes.

HOW IT WORKS

ISR lessons are taught for 10 minutes each day, 5 days a week (Monday through Friday), for 6 weeks.
New students are skilled in 6 weeks, and refresher students typically in 3 weeks.

With a focus on safe, customized, one-on-one lessons by certified Instructors, ISR’s Self-Rescue® lessons emphasize health, ongoing program evaluations and parent education to deliver the most effective and safest results in the industry.

ROLLBACK TO FLOAT.
Lessons for children 6 to 12 month old
focus on teaching the child to roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, and to maintain this life-saving position until help arrives. Accidents usually happen when kids are fully clothed so all students will practice their skills in clothes toward the end of the lesson series.

SWIM FLOAT SWIM
Lessons for children approximately 15 months up to 6 years and older
focus on teaching the swim-float-swim survival sequence. Children learn to swim with their head down, roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe, and flip back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool, where they can either crawl out or until they can be rescued.

LEARN TO SWIM BEFORE WALKING
Each ISR Instructor safely and gently guides your child through the the process of mastering his/her survival skills. The protocols and ongoing education your Instructor receives ensures that your child, at the end of lessons, will be able to successfully demonstrate the age appropriate survival sequence. Swim students are evaluated every lesson and progressed according to their abilities.

Once the children are fully skilled they will practice ISR’s Self-Rescue® techniques fully clothed during lessons. It is recommended that children complete refresher lessons to help their in-water skill level grow with their physical development.

REFRESHER LESSONS
Refresher lessons are extremely important in continuing and maintaining your child’s Self-Rescue® skill development.  Children grow and develop rapidly from infants to toddlers and young children. This development process represents improved strength, coordination, and a more finely tuned cognitive ability. In accordance with this growth, children enroll in ISR return periodically to participate in Refresher Lessons.  ISR recommends completing a refresher course once every 6 months to maintain and improve/progress aquatic skills.

Previous Swim-Float-Swim students are recommended to take a 2 week refresher course (or more!).
Previous Rollback-to-Float students will take an average of 4 to 6 weeks to learn the full swim-float-swim sequence.

MAINTENANCE
Maintenance lessons are also available at any time for regular fine-tuning of your child's Self-Rescue® skills.  These lessons are highly recommended before going on a beach vacation or a trip to the lake to make sure your child is confident in the water.

SAFETY
Safety is the most important part of ISR lessons. During registration, your child’s unique medical history is reviewed to identify any potential health issues that may affect your child’s lessons. Each instructor also follows daily protocols during the lesson process. Your child will receive a customized lesson based on their current and past medical history, and their emotional and personality characteristics to give you and your child the best learning environment possible.

Check out the videos below to see what your child can learn!

Children 6 to 12 months old

Children ages 1-6 years old

Older, more mobile children will learn the full ISR Self-Rescue® sequence of swimming until they need air, rotating onto the back to float, then rolling back over to continue swimming. ISR students are taught to repeat this sequence until they reach the safety of the steps, side of the pool, or the shoreline.
